Celebrating the 5 days of Diwali
The Festival of Lights isn't just a one day celebration. It is a five day journey of joy, tradition and togetherness. Each day has its own special meaning filled with stories of victory, love and prosperity.
Let's take a look at the magic behind these five days!
Day 1 - Dhanteras
- Marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations
- People buy gold, silver or new utensils to attract prosperity
- Dedicated to Dhanvantary, the Goddess of health and healing
Day 2 - Choti Diwali
- Celebrates Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura
- People wake up early, apply fragrant oils and take ritual baths
- Homes are decorated with rangoli and Diyas
Day 3 - Laxmi Puja (Main Diwali)
- The most significant day - devoted to Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth
- Families perform pujas to welcome prosperity into their homes
- Homes and temples glow with diyas and festive lights
Day 4 - Govardhan Puja (padwa)/ Happy New Year
- Honors Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect villagers from a storm
- Friends and relatives visit with gifts and best wishes for the season
- It also marks the bond between spouses, with husbands giving gifts
Day 5 - Bhai Dooj
- Dedicated to the bond between brothers and sisters
- Sisters perform a tilak ceremony for their brothers, praying for their well-being
- Brothers offer gifts in return as a token of love
Diwali isn't just about lighting lamps and celebrating with loved ones - it's also a reminder to ignite your inner light. Just as we celebrate the victory of good over evil, Diwali encourages us to overcome darkness within ourselves and shine with hope and positivity.
May this festival inspire you to be the light in the world and in your own life!
We wish you all a Happy Diwali!
