Goddess Saraswati - A Vasant Panchami Special

Feb 02, 2025

As Diwali is significant for worshiping Laxmi (Goddess of wealth and prosperity) and Navratri is significant for worshiping Durga (Goddess of power and valor), similarly Vasant Panchami is significant for worshiping Saraswati - the Goddess of knowledge and wisdom.

What is the story of Goddess Saraswati?

Once upon a time, in the heavens above, the Gods watched over the world as it blossomed with life. But something was missing. The people of Earth were happy yet they couldn't express that happiness. They longed for something more -a gift to help them express their thoughts, create music and seek knowledge.

It was then that Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, decided to bring a special Goddess into existence. With His divine powers, He created Goddess Saraswati, a beautiful deity with golden glow, dressed in a pure white saree, holding a veena (musical instrument) in her hands.

As soon as Saraswati stepped into the world, the strummed her veena and music happened -

  • The air filled with music
  • Rivers began to flow in rhythm
  • Birds chirped in melodies
  • People who were once silent found their voices

The gift of speech, wisdom and creativity spread across the land. Seeing this, the Gods rejoiced and decided to honor Saraswati by dedicating a special day to her. They chose the time when the fields turned golden with mustard flowers, and a gentle warm breeze filled the air.

This day came to known as Vasant Panchami, marking the beginning of spring and celebrating the arrival of knowledge and creativity in the world.

How is it celebrated?

Every year, people wear yellow - the color of wisdom and prosperity. They offer prayers to Goddess Saraswati and seek Her blessings for wisdom, learning and the arts. Children begin their first lessons on this auspicious day and artists and musicians pay tribute to the Goddess who gifted them their talents.
