Temple bells: Where science meets faith
Nearly every Hindu temple features a bell at the entrance for devotees to ring. What's the scientific reason behind it?
Left and right brain hemisphere
The sharp sound of the bell is known to activate the right and left hemispheres of the brain, bringing them into alignment. This helps in improving concentration and focus during worship.
Seven seconds, seven chakras
The sound produced by the temple bell is designed to last for at least seven seconds, which calms the seven chakras (healing centers). This prolonged reverberation helps in slowing down the mind's activities, leading to a meditative state
Composition of the bell
The bell is typically made from a combination of metals such as copper, zinc, brass and bronze. These materials produce a sound that creates positive vibrations and dispels negative energies.
What does positive vibration mean?
It means that the sound of the bell is said to echo the primordial sound of the universe - OM or AUM.
The dual combination (bell + OM sound) creates vibrations that synchronize an individual with the universal cosmic energies.
So while the bell's sound clears the mind, OM connects the practitioner to the universal consciousness.
