The balance of the universe - Shiva and Shakti - A MahaShivratri special

Feb 14, 2025

A tale of divine love (Short version)

Shiva was in deep meditation on Mount Kailash when Sati (the embodiment of Shakti) found herself drawn to Him. Despite her father's disapproval, Sati's love for Shiva remained unwavering. She won His heart and their union became a symbol of spiritual harmony.

When Sati visited her father, she witnessed great insults towards Shiva. Unable the bear the disrespect, she sacrificed herself.

Devastated and consumed by grief, Shiva withdrew from the world, plunging the cosmos into chaos. Sati was reborn as Parvati and brought Shiva back - balancing the world again.

Two sides of one coin

Shiva and Shakti are forces that together create and sustain everything in the universe. They are like two sides of one coin - one cannot exist without the other.

Shiva

  • Stillness
  • Consciousness
  • Awareness
  • Calm force that holds everything together

Shakti

  • Energy
  • Power
  • Creations
  • Force that makes everything move and come to life

Imagine a lamp

The lamp is there but without electricity, it cannot shine. The electricity is powerful but without the lamp, it has no form or purpose.

Lamp is Shiva and electricity is Shakti

They are the perfect team where one brings stillness and the other brings movement.

Why is this important?

Without calmness, energy becomes chaos. Without energy, stillness becomes emptiness. Shiva and Shakti teach us balance between

  • Stillness and movement
  • Thought and action
  • Peace and power

On MahaShivatri, we celebrate this divine union, reminding ourselves to find balance in our own lives!
