The Festival that brought people together
Today is Ganesh Chaturthi - the grand festival that unites millions in devotion to Lord Ganesha. But how did it grow into such a huge celebration?
Maratha Era
The Peshwas of Maharashtra (18th century) were great devotees of Ganesha and promoted the celebration in their courts and communities.
From private to public
Ganesh Chaturthi was a private household celebration until the 19th century. In 1893, freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak turned it into a public festival to unite people and support India's freedom movement against British rule.
Post - Independence growth
The festival continued to expand across India, especially in Maharashtra and later spread to other regions and countries with the Indian diaspora.
Today it is one of India's biggest festivals, marked by grand idols, Eco-friendly movements, processions and millions coming together in devotion.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a celebration of faith, community and new beginnings.
Wishing you a blessed Ganesh Chaturthi!
