The powers of Hanuman Chalisa - A Cuddly Gurus Special

Apr 23, 2024

Today is Hanuman Jayanti, an auspicious Hindu festival celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Hanuman. Devotees offer prayers to this Great Lord in different ways. Some organize a Ramayan path while others recite the Hanuman Chalisa.

But what is the Hanuman Chalisa and why is it so important?

Hanuman Chalisa is a timeless ode honoring Lord Hanuman, who is known for His devotion to Lord Ram. It is a set of 40 verses created by the revered poet - saint Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century.

How did he write it?

  • Once Akbar challenged Tulsidas to show him Lord Rama. Tulsidas said that Rama could only be seen with true devotion
  • This made Akbar angry and he put the poet behind bars
  • Tulsidas wrote the Hanuman Chalisa and recited it on the 40th day

Right after that, an entire army of monkeys ransacked the palace of Jalauddin and the Mughal realized his mistake. He fell at the feet of Tulsidas and release him later on.

So why we do chant it?

As the Hanuman Chalisa unfolds verse by verse, Lord Hanuman's many qualities are enumerated. The hymn is sung and recited by people who believe that the greatest of Lord Ram's devotee, Hanuman, will bless them. It bestows protection from illness, adversaries and adversities.

The Hanuman Chalisa gives you direction

The Chalisa is known to be the blissful realm where breath meets the heart. In moments of negativity, when the mind and soul seem adrift and lacking in awareness, one can find solace in their breath by chanting the Chalisa.

"Hanuman represents immense strength and devotion. Let that become a part of your life. Your thoughts come and go - they do not exist by themselves, but you can make them work for you. You can choose to turn your thoughts either into a devil or into a divine form. Please turn it into a divine force."
