Why do we touch to our elders feet?

Jul 02, 2025

Two weeks ago, we explored the beautiful traditions that welcome a newborn into the world. Today, we look at the other end of life's journey.. and the sacred gesture that honors our elders.

Energy flows downward

In Hindu culture, we bow at the feet of our elders, not just as a gesture of respect but to honor the lifetime of blessings, wisdom and spiritual energy they carry. By touching their feet, we seek to absorb that positive energy into our own lives.

Charan Sparch = Humility

This beautiful tradition is known as Charam Sparsh which means "touching the feet". It's much more than a gesture - it's an act of humility. Through Charan Sparsh, we acknowledge the presence of divinity in others, especially in those who have walked before us. An we open our hearts to receive their positive energy and good wishes.

Blessings rise up

As we lower ourselves in humility through Charan Sparsh - blessings rise up. The elder places a hand on our head and offers words of love, strength and protection - often saying "Ayushman Bhava" meaning "May you live a long and healthy life". These blessings are not just words; they are heartfelt energies passed down from one generation to the next

A circle of life

Each ritual, whether it's the whisper of a mantra into a newborn's ear or the reverent act of Charan Sparsh. reflects deep rooted values of love, respect and spiritual connection. These age-old practices aren't just ceremonies - they're meaningful moments that shape identity, strengthen family bons and pass down the light of dharma from one generation to the next.
