From nothing to everything - How Hindus revolutionized math with the number 0
The concept of Shunya (zero) appears in ancient Indian texts as an idea of "nothingness". In 628 CE, Brahmagupta, a pioneering Indian mathematician, defined zero as a number and outlined its basic operations, including addition, subtraction and multiplication while also attempting to address division by zero.
So how did 0 revolutionize the world?
- The introduction of zero allowed the development of the decimal system, where the position of a digit determines its value. For example 10, 100, 1000 etc. Without zero, calculations involving large numbers would be cumbersome and inefficient.
- Zero acts as a placeholder and a number itself. For example, number 105. This is crucial for basic arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Zero also enables negative numbers and the concept of nothingness in mathematics
- Algebra and calculus would not have been possible without 0. Zero allows for the formulation of equations, solving for unknowns and understanding mathematical functions.
But most importantly - The binary system, which powers computers and digital technology is built entirely on 0s and 1s.
Without zero, modern computing, as we know it, would not exist.
The contribution of zero doesn't just stop at mathematics - it has directly fueled the progress we see today. The algorithms driving artificial intelligence, the coding behind software development and the very architecture of digital networks all trace back to the concept of Shunya - Zero.
By gifting the world the concept of zero, ancient Indian thinkers enabled the scientific and technological leaps that define modern civilization. Their insights continue to transform the world even today.
