The Math Connection - Part 1
Hinduism shares a deep bond with mathematics, and has influenced modern science and technology. Let's explore the connection between Hindu philosophy and groundbreaking mathematical advancements.
Math in temples
Hindu temples follow the principles of Vastu Shastra, which uses geometric precision to align structures with cosmic energy. The Brihadeeswarar temple's architecture aligns with the principles of the golden ratio (approximately 1.618) which is known for its aesthetic appeal.
Astronomical achievements
Hindu astronomers calculated the Earth's diameter, the distance to the moon and the duration of a year, centuries before modern science. Surya Siddhanta, an ancient text, was written in the 4th century. It estimated a tropical year lasts approximately 365.2563627 days. This is strikingly close to the modern value of 365.2421904 days.
Invention of the decimal system
The decimal system, also known as the base - 10 number system, was first formalized in India around the 3rd century BCE. The system is based on 10 symbols (0 to 9) place value, and positional notation. It was revolutionary because it simplified calculations and paved the way for advanced mathematics.
The decimal system reached Europe by the 12th century through scholars like Fibonacci, becoming the foundation of modern mathematics. It replaced cumbersome Roman numerals and remains the global standard for numeric representation today.
Do you recognize the number 1.618 in the Mona Lisa painting?
Take a look at the famous painting above - What do you see?
You see the golden ratio. The same golden ratio that was used to build the Brihadeeswarar temple in 1010 AD. The Mona Lisa was made between 1503 and 1519 - almost 400 years later.
This is just the beginning! Stay tuned for part 2 where we explore the biggest contribution Hindus gave to the math world:
