The true signifiance of Janamashtami

Aug 31, 2023

Janamashtami is the joyous celebration of Lord Krishna's birth. It is a festival that holds a special place in the hearts of millions of Hindus across the world.

The word "janma" means birth and the word "ashtami" means eight. The number 8 is deeply associated to Lord Krishna

Why number 8?

  • Lord Krishna's birthday is celebrated eight days after Raksha Bandhan
  • He is the eighth child of His mother, Devaki
  • Lord Krishna is the eight incarnation of Lord Vishnu

It is believed that Lord Vishnu comes to save humanity whenever He sees an imbalance that's affecting its peace and prosperity.

He did so in the form of Lord Krishna 5250 years ago, during the Mahabharata war

The Founder

Lord Krishna played a key role in the Mahabharata. He was the charioteer of Arjuna. He was counseling Arjuna on various segments of life like Dharma (righteous path), Karma (deeds), Theistic Devotion, Yogic ideals, salvation, knowledge, etc. because Arjuna was in emotional turmoil in killing his brothers and cousins. The verses mentioned in this book is often called a life guide or spiritual dictionary.

However, Lord Krishna was much more than a leader and a crisis manager

He is one of the founders of Hinduism, influencing not only the religion, philosophy and its spirituality but also its literature, culture and heritage

Janamashtami is not just about Lord Krishna's birth but about the profound wisdom that His life and teachings offer.

May this Janamashtami illumiate your hearts and guide you on the path of righteousness and enlightenment
