The Story of Ganesha and His Kheer

Jun 06, 2024

Ganesha, also known as Ganapati, is one of the most beloved deities in Hindu mythology. He is easily recognized by his elephant head, large belly, and his kind, wise eyes. Ganesha is often called upon at the beginning of new ventures and is known as the remover of obstacles and the God of wisdom and learning.

One popular story about Ganesha involves his love for kheer, a traditional Indian rice pudding. The story goes like this:

Lord Ganesha decides to visit Earth in disguise to test the kindness and generosity of people. He transforms himself into a poor young boy and enters a village.

The Tale

One hot afternoon, the disguised Ganesha, looking tired and hungry, walked through the village, hoping someone would offer him food. He knocked on several doors, asking for something to eat, but everyone turned him away. The villagers were either too busy with their own lives or simply not willing to help a poor, unknown boy.

Feeling disheartened, Ganesha continued to wander until he came across a small, dilapidated hut at the edge of the village. He knocked on the door, and an old, poor lady answered. Despite her own poverty, she greeted the boy with a warm smile and invited him inside. Seeing his condition, she immediately set about preparing a meal with the little she had.

The old lady made a simple but delicious bowl of kheer (rice pudding) for the boy. Ganesha was touched by her kindness and selflessness. He ate the kheer with great relish and thanked the old lady for her generosity.

After finishing the meal, Ganesha revealed his true identity to the old lady. The lady was astonished and fell to her knees, bowing in reverence. Ganesha blessed her for her kindness and assured her that her selfless act would not go unrewarded. He promised that prosperity and happiness would always be in her home. From that day on, the old lady's hut transformed into a beautiful house, and she never faced poverty again.
